Hours after terrorists struck at dusitD2 Hotel in Riverside, Nairobi, a Good Samaritan arrived in a van packed with containers full of tea and snacks for the rescue team. Grace Wambui Odongo says after following the rescueoperation on television, she realised that there was no time for those at the scene to go eat. She thought of the security forces, journalists and others involved in the rescue operation at the hotel. “I resolved to prepare tea and some snacks and take to the people camping at the scene of operation. It was evident those camping at the hotel will have no time to go have some food. In fact, am not sure of any place where they would go eat at night,” she told The Standard.

Ms Odongo left her home near Kileleshwa Police Station and drove to a supermarket in Westlands to buy sugar and snacks. With a few helpers she prepared tea and made her way to the location of the attack. Odongo says at first the officers who had blocked the road towards the hotel denied her entry, till she explained her mission and even showed them the foodstuff. She explains: “I told the officers that l was taking tea to those involved in rescue operation at the hotel. I arrived there at 11pm and started serving.” The tea ran out and she rushed home to prepare more.

By 8am Odongo had prepared and served tea five times. She says that Christians are called upon to help in times of need. “As a Christian, this was the time and since l wasn’t an army officer, the only help l could offer is to cook for the officers involved in operation,” she said. Odongo, who is the proprietor of Classic Guest Home in Kileleshwa, reveals that faithful at Holy Trinity Church helped her purchase foodstuff.
